Many people understand depression as feeling "down", "flat" or sad. However depression may also present in other ways, such as feeling empty, or irritable, or simply the loss of feeling pleasure from activities that would usually provide enjoyment.
Depression may affect daily functioning, and if left untreated can lead to longer-term issues including marriage/family, social and employment issues, or chronic depression and suicidal thinking.
